How to Prepare for Your Family Photo Session (and What to Wear)

You’ve booked your family session—how exciting! Now that your date is on the calendar, the next big question is: What’s next? This guide will walk you through how to prepare for your session, from choosing outfits and prepping the kids to what to expect on session day. My goal is to make this experience fun, relaxed, and full of connection—because those are the moments that make the most beautiful photos.

Choosing What to Wear

Let’s start with the question every family asks: “What will we wear?”

The wardrobe you choose helps set the tone for your photos, so it’s worth spending a little time planning. The good news? It doesn’t have to be stressful! Here’s how to make it easy and stylish:

1. Start With One Outfit

A great place to begin is with one key outfit—often Mom’s. Find something that makes you feel confident and comfortable, then build the rest of the family’s looks around it. Whether that’s a flowing dress you already love or something new you’ve been eyeing, it sets the palette and mood. Alternatively, another good starting point is to think of the colors in your home (these images will be on your walls after all) or maybe your favorite color, then go from there.

2. Choose Coordinating, Not Matching

Gone are the days of identical white shirts and jeans! Instead, think coordinating—colors and tones that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Muted, earthy tones photograph beautifully (especially in nature) and tend to flatter every skin tone. Think soft mustard, olive, dusty rose, navy, cream, and warm browns. Solid colors are better, but soft florals or simple plaids are okay. Try to avoid loud colors, busy patterns, and large logos or graphics.

3. Add Layers and Texture

Textures and layers bring depth to your images. A chunky cardigan, a denim shirt tied at the waist, lace trim, or corduroy can add personality and warmth.

4. Keep Comfort in Mind

You’ll be walking, snuggling, maybe even playing chase! Choose clothes that allow movement and feel good to wear. Avoid anything itchy or stiff—if the kids are uncomfortable, they’ll let us know (and it’ll show).

5. Accessorize Thoughtfully

Small details go a long way. Hats, scarves, suspenders, hair bows, or jewelry can add pops of interest.

6. Prep Your Outfits Early

Lay out clothing a few days in advance. Make sure everything is clean, pressed, and ready to go. If you plan to change outfits during your session, bring hangers and a bag to keep things wrinkle-free.

Getting the Family Ready

For the Kids

A little preparation can make a big difference! Start chatting about the session a few days beforehand. Let them know it’s going to be fun—a bit of an adventure where they get to play and explore. Bring favorite snacks and water. Happy kiddos make the best photos.

For Dad

Let him know that all he has to do is relax and have fun loving on his wife and kids. Take the pressure off. These sessions are about connection, not perfection.

For Mom

Take a deep breath and enjoy it. Pamper yourself a little—get your hair or nails done (if that’s your thing).  Don't stress, and remember to just have fun with your family. This is the time to be yourself with your beautiful family, enjoy it.

The most beautiful photos come from genuine joy and love, not perfection.

What to Bring

Think of this as your mini “session survival kit.”
  • Snacks and water (for everyone)
  • Comfy shoes for walking between spots
  • Blanket or shawl to cozy up in for photos, or other props you might like to incorporate
  • Brush, tissues, and chapstick for quick touch-ups
  • Backup clothes if little ones get messy
  • A lint roller and bug spray can also be lifesavers, especially for outdoor sessions.

Session Day Tips

The big day is finally here! You’ve done the planning—now it’s time to enjoy the experience.

Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Have fun! Laughter, snuggles, and silly moments are gold. It is so important that you and your kids enjoy this experience because it will show up in your photos! Relax and love on your family.

  • Stay connected.  Be sure that your always touching someone. Whether it's a hug or snuggle, or just a tender hand on the shoulder. Make contact with your family. This shows connections and love.

  • Let go of perfection. Kids being themselves—giggles, shy smiles, wild energy—make for the most authentic portraits.

  • Trust the process. I’ll guide you through everything while keeping it light and easy. We’ll start with one or two classic, “everyone-look-at-the-camera” shots, and then the rest will be all about movement and genuine connection.

After the Session

Once our time together wraps, I carefully back up your images and begin editing. I will post a few sneak peeks on my Facebook and Instagram pages (links at the bottom of this post) within a few days. Your full gallery will be delivered in about 2 weeks. These are the moments you’ll treasure for years—the real, joyful, and perfectly imperfect story of your family.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for your family photo session doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Focus on what makes your family you: the laughter, the love, the tiny quirks that make your story unique. With a little preparation (and the right outfit), you’ll be ready for an unforgettable session filled with heart and connection.

If you ever have questions—or need a second opinion on outfits—I’m just a message away. Let’s make this your favorite family session yet.
